Sea Moss (Chondrus crispus)

Cultural & Mythological Background

My natural, wild-grown Jamaican Sea Moss grows in the breathtaking turquoise sea directly off Jamaica. Known in German-speaking countries as Knorpeltank or Rotalge. In short, Jamaican Sea Moss is a species of seaweed. It occurs in green-yellow, purple-brown, red, black and yellow. Sea Moss grows wild on the rocky terrain of the Atlantic Ocean, mainly off North America and Europe. The drying process influences the final color that ends up in our glass. So when sea moss is freshly harvested and dried in the sun, it loses its intense color. However, this does not mean the color indicates which variety contains more nutrients. All varieties come to us with a similar macronutrient and micronutrient content.

Sea Moss (Chondrus crispus)

Healing & Spiritual Use

Due to its high content of natural minerals (92 out of 102), Jamaican Sea Moss is a must for your healthy and balanced diet. Although minerals are essential for life, they are not produced in sufficient quantities by our bodies. We therefore need to consume them daily. Their task is not only to build bones, teeth, hormones, and blood cells but also to transmit vital stimuli to the muscles and brain. It also strengthens the immune system and protects cells from free radicals. In addition, the high iron content ensures an optimal oxygen supply to the body, which gives us more energy and performance in everyday life. It is also a natural aphrodisiac.

The high content of polysaccharides in the cell walls turns Jamaican Sea Moss into a gel when it comes into contact with water, allowing it to act as an emulsifier and thickening agent. Sea Moss can therefore be used as a healthy plant-based alternative to gelatine for making puddings, creams and dressings. When used regularly, the high sulfur content has a skin-tightening effect and alleviates skin diseases and rashes. My recipe will tell you more about what else you can do with Sea Moss.
